Renowned architect Sjoerd Soeters made the urban design for Java Island. His plan to create a typical Amsterdam inner-city atmosphere succeeded. Java Island has grown into a much-loved residential area, with a rich mix of building styles. The neighbourhood's location is ideal. On the Oostelijke Handelskade, at 6 minutes cycling distance, is shopping. Primary schools, day nurseries and a medical centre are also within cycling distance. The 32 canal-side houses are located on Brantasgracht and Lamongracht. They have a garden or roof terrace. Each building is 4.5 metres wide and 10 metres deep and consists of 4 or 5 floors. 9 young architects are responsible for designing these contemporary canal houses. The result is a maximum mix of housing types and facades. The view from the house is also special. The canals are bridged by cycling and walking bridges designed by Belgian artists Guy Rombouts and Monica Droste.
