Description
The Defence Island is located in the middle of the Singel against Woerden's historic core. The island is part of the monumental fortress surrounding the city centre. From the late 19th to the late 20th century, the island served as a central workshop for repairing clothes, tents and other equipment of the army. All these years, it was a closed area and not accessible to Woerden residents. With the release of the military site, the island underwent a transformation from an isolated and heavily polluted piece of city to an attractive place to live in the heart of Woerden.
