Huizen is known as a former fishing village, although it was not until the end of the seventeenth century that fishing became one of the main means of livelihood. Before that, agriculture and cottage industries were an important source of livelihood. Huizen received its name in the fourteenth century because it was -as is said- the first village in the Gooi region to have stone houses.
