Breda is a compound of 'Brede' and 'Aa', meaning the 'wide water'. Indeed, this is where the Aa widened at the point where the river flowed into the Mark. Breda is also an Orange City because of its historical connection with the House of Nassau.

Breda is also called The Hague of the South, which is understandable when you consider its numerous national monuments, museums and upmarket shopping areas. The city hosts many cultural events and its vibrant nightlife offers variety and entertainment for everyone.
