When the 'Campina milk plant' opened in 1961, it was already a state-of-the-art factory site. But where, for over 55 years, activity reigned supreme, silence now reigns. Only the smell of milk remains. The floor and wall tiles in the main hall are steeped in it. This current silence is just a sham. From 2021, a modern, sustainable city district with some 700 homes and 18,000 m2 of commercial facilities will arise here on 3.5 hectares of land. This will develop a new city district, transforming the canal zone into a sustainable urban area where living, working and recreation come together. High- and low-rise buildings will be integrated with the characteristic historical factory buildings. This will preserve the historical significance of the site.

On the former Campina site - now called De Caai - work is being done on innovation that benefits everyone. Unadulterated craftsmanship in a new guise. Entrepreneurs are inspired in each other's proximity, come to cooperative and collaborative ventures and focus on finding solutions to societal challenges. Residents experience plenty of peace and space and the possibilities of being together. It is the place where you make conscious choices and leave your mark to make this world just a little bit nicer. In this way, the authentic DNA of the cooperative is preserved, but now in the modern guise of a community.
