Description

Enschede is the largest city in Overijssel. This municipality has a population of over 157,000. It is situated in the Twente region, a few kilometres from the Dutch-German border. The nearest town to the west is Hengelo; to the east it is the German town of Gronau; to the north, Oldenzaal; and to the south, Haaksbergen. Enschede has a harbour at the terminus of the Twente Canal; there are also many streams running through the city.

Like many university towns, Enschede has a lively nightlife. There are many nightlife venues, particularly on the Oude Markt and in the side streets. Events are regularly held on the Oude Markt. There are also several music venues, museums and a theatre. The municipality is home to a number of national and war memorials.

Enschede also has a lot to offer in terms of sport. It is home to the oldest marathon in the Netherlands: the annual Enschede Marathon. Professional football club FC Twente competes in the Eredivisie and plays its matches at De Grolsch Veste stadium, which has a capacity of over 30,000 spectators. Since 2008, Enschede has had a 400-metre ice rink: the IJsbaan Twente.

Enschede has plenty of primary schools, secondary schools, further education institutions and a university.

The city is undergoing rapid development. The city centre has been revitalised since the 1980s through the creation of a car-free city square and the redevelopment of former industrial sites into housing, shopping centres and offices.
